Technical Tours for the AYNS Summit, 2023

The 4th African Youth Nuclear Summit, 2023 is here with us and on the list of activities is an exciting opportunity to participate in any of the optional post conference technical tours.  The tours run concurrently as follows:

The Kenyan nuclear science and technology landscape is increasingly getting diverse with applications in industry, health, agriculture and exploitation of natural resources among others.  The facility handles the processing of chemical and radiological waste as well as storage of unused radioactive sources. It was commissioned in 2022 and is located at the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority’s regional office at Oloolua, Kajiado County.

Olkaria Geothermal Power plants

Geothermal energy is clean, reliable and sustainable energy option that poses minimal risk to the environment. Geothermal energy accounts for about 48% of all electricity generated in Kenya — the highest share of any country. Owned and Operated by Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KENGEN), the Olkaria Geothermal Power Plants is the largest geothermal power complex in Africa. It is supported by the geology of the Great Rift Valley and is situated at the Hell’s Gate National Park near the scenic Lake Naivasha, Nakuru County.

IAEA Internet Research Reactor Laboratory

Launched in 2015, the IAEA’s Internet Reactor Laboratory (IRL) is meant to help countries without a research reactor boost their nuclear science research and development. Through IRL, a host reactor is connected with learning institutions in other countries, providing practical insight into reactor physics, operation and applications. Hosted at Kenyatta University, the platform provides online access to the MA-R1 TRIGA research rector in Morocco’s National Centre for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (CNESTEN).

Integrated Molecular Imaging Centre, KUTRRH

The integrated molecular imaging centre of Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital is a unique ultra-modern public facility that offers comprehensive management of cancer and other diseases. The centre is equipped with a commercial Cyclotron, 2 PET-CTs, SPECT-CT, Cyberknife, and 3.0 Tesla MRI among other equipment that helps in achieving early cancer diagnosis, treatment and assessing responses to treatment. The centre also features a 100 patient accommodation facility for hosting patients and their family members.

Secondary Standards Dosimetry Lab

Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDLs) are specialist laboratories that perform calibration of dosimetry equipment for end users in hospitals and industry. In Kenya, the lab is hosted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards at one of its metrology laboratories which is part of the National Metrology Institute. The lab has three bunkers for Caesium-137 calibration source, X-ray calibration and Cobalt-60.
